Doctor
of Philosophy in Zoology (Ph.D.)
Entry
into our Ph.D. program requires
prior completion of an M.S. degree or 30 semester hours of
graduate work with at least a 3.0 average. Students
who do not have a prior Master's degree or graduate coursework
may fulfill this requirement during the first 1-2 years of
the Doctoral Program. The Ph.D. is a research degree, and
emphasis is on the successful completion of an original dissertation.
A dissertation adviser will guide you through your program,
with the assistance of a graduate committee tailored to your
objectives.
During
the first two years in the program, you are expected to:
(1)
Complete any required formal course work
(2)
Present a dissertation proposal for committee approval
(3)
Pass the departmental examination.
The
remainder of your graduate program is primarily devoted to
independent and original research, culminating in dissertation,
which will be defended before your doctoral research committee.
Doctoral
students are encouraged and expected to get involved in a
number of professional activities. For example, participation
in scientific meetings, manuscript submission and publication,
and submission of grant proposals.
The complete description of requirements can be found here.
