Miami University and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine
Dual Admission Program
Are you a highly motivated high school senior interested in pursuing a career in medicine? Have you had at least some medically related experiences that have helped you decide that medicine is the right career path for you? Are you excelling in high school and confident that you will excel at the university level? If you have answered yes to these three questions, then the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (UCCOM) Dual Admission Program (DAP) may be right for you!
The UCCOM DAP is a program developed by UCCOM and Miami University for exceptional students interested in obtaining their undergraduate degree at Miami and their medical degree at the UCCOM. Students are accepted into Miami to complete their undergraduate degree and concurrently guaranteed admittance into UCCOM as long as they maintain a specified level of academic excellence and achieve at least a minimum specified MCAT score. The total program normally takes eight years, with four years of undergraduate work at Miami University and four years at the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati.
This program will give you the peace of mind in knowing that you will be accepted into one of the leading medical schools in the country after four years at Miami. This enables you to take advantage of the whole college experience at Miami rather than focusing exclusively on gaining acceptance into medical school. Additionally, as a Dual Admission Student you will have special opportunities to get to know the UCCOM medical school staff, students, and your future classmates. The DAP offers a variety of opportunities for Dual Admission Students, including seminars, workshops, research opportunities, MCAT preparation, weekend programs, and much more. Because Dual Admission Students know they have a place waiting for them at the UCCOM, they tend to take a slightly different approach to the college experience. Some choose to study abroad, spend more time in research laboratories, pursue non-science minors, and utilize the opportunity to explore medicine at UCCOM while an undergraduate at Miami.
Requirements for Application
The DAP is a competitive program in which up to 10 applicants will be accepted. All applicants are expected to have scored at least a 30 on the ACT or 1310 on the SAT. Additionally, all applicants should have experiences in health care and are strongly encouraged to apply to Miami University for a Harrison Scholarship (deadline for the Harrison Scholar application is November 1, 2007). Interview preference will be given first to Harrison Scholar Finalists and second to Harrison Scholar applicants who were not chosen as finalists.
Successful applicants will be outstanding students with intellectual curiosity, aptitude in the natural sciences, and a strong interest in pursuing a career in medicine. While at Miami, they need to maintain at least a 3.40 overall and science GPA and score at least 27 on the MCAT (with no less than 9 on the biological sciences section, and no less than 8 on any other section). Unsatisfactory academic performance, disciplinary action at Miami University, or criminal activity may result in dismissal
from this program.
Application and Admission Process
Applications for the DAP are only available on-line through the UCCOM website (see link below). They will be available starting October 1, 2007 and will close in early January 2008. Students should already be in the process of applying to Miami University for either Early Decision or Priority Decision or applying for Harrison Scholarships. It may take a few days to complete the DAP application, so plan your time wisely. Your application must be submitted no later than the deadline posted on the UCCOM website, and letters of recommendation must be postmarked by that date as well. Any applications submitted, or letters postmarked after that deadline, will not be considered.
Completed applications consist of the on-line forms (academic qualifications, essays, and extracurricular activities), two letters of recommendation, and an official copy of your high school transcript. We also reserve the right to review your Miami University applications. Students will be selected for interviews based on the following criteria:
Academic qualifications
Grades and grade point average in high school, SAT/ACT scores, and high school class rank
Quality of personal essay
The essay will help evaluators to assess the motivation, maturity, and leadership qualities of each applicant
Extracurricular activities
Extracurricular high school or community activities
Awards and other special recognition
Letters of recommendation
Two letters of recommendation are required from non-relatives who know you well, with at least one of the letters from a teacher, counselor, or other school official. Information regarding academic and personal characteristics should be evaluated in the letter.
Interviews of the selected students will be conducted at the UCCOM in the months of February and March by the UCCOM. Final selection and notification will be
sent to students from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in early April.
Performance Review
Accepted students will undergo periodic performance reviews during their time at Miami. The program advisor, along with a joint premedical committee, will review each student's academic objectives, personal goals, and additional achievements.
