6th Nature Sit, April 24, 2008
Along the Marcum Trail

Environmental Biology (Zoology 121 Honors) -J.Oris

Have you ever sat alone in the woods
for an hour or more,
to simply slow down
and observe
the wonder of nature surrounding you?

Below are the thoughts, sketches, and photos from this year's "Nature Sit".

I've only been sitting in this spot for about five minutes and already I know what will attract my attention for the next hour: WIND.

I can only occasionally feel any breeze on my face and arms, but the small, fledgling plants that rise only five or six inches off of the leafy forest floor are constantly moving back and forth to the slightest movement of air.

If I look off and observe all of these tiny plants in one direction for twenty or so feet, I see that some areas are still while others are in motion, and the dynamic is constantly changing.

It's funny how strong the temptation is to check the time or worry about what other things must be accomplished with today's time...

I'm sitting on a log... it's more comfortable than some of the classroom chairs at Miami. There are some bugs in it though, which would freak out Melissa.
