The Department of Zoology / Exploring the Biology of Animals from DNA to Ecosystems

Welcome to the Department of Zoology at Miami University
Introduction from Douglas Meikle, Ph.D., Professor and Department Chair

Why Choose Zoology as a Major?

Zoology is the major chosen by most premedical students at Miami. They choose Zoology because it includes the majority of courses that are found in a typical Department of Biology, from cell biology and molecular genetics to physiology and neuroscience. The broad range of courses that Zoology majors take in anatomy, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, physiology, and related areas helps them do very well in the Biological Sciences section of the MCAT. In addition it can help to prepare you for the basic science courses in medical school and can give you the background you need to understand and deal with the wealth of information you will encounter during your medical training. Our department offers a wide variety of medically relevant courses as well as courses in environmental biology and toxicology.

The Department of Zoology has one of the best placement records for premedical students at Miami. Zoology majors are encouraged to minor outside of the sciences. Premedical students in Zoology are encouraged to obtain depth in biological sciences, but also breadth of knowledge outside of the major that includes biochemistry and classes in social sciences, humanities, business, and fine arts. Hence, Zoology majors have the advantage of being able to take a breadth of courses in the B.A. program, outside of the sciences, a breadth that is strongly valued by medical schools. For a suggested course schedule for Zoology majors, please view the following link: Course Selection for Premedical Zoology Majors.

The Department of Zoology provides a very strong advising and support system for students seeking a career in medicine. For example, the Department offers Zoology 400, "Current Issues in Medicine" and also serves as the support department for premedical student groups such as the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) and Miami MED. The Department provides support for students who are in the process of applying to medical school and need to have letters sent to medical and other professional schools. The Zoology Department houses the Mallory-Wilson Center for Healthcare Education. Most of Miami’s pre-health advisors are faculty in the Department of Zoology. Zoology faculty, including Dr. David F. Wilson, who directs Miami’s premedical program, strive to provide our majors with personalized advising.

For those undergraduate Zoology majors that have an interest in obtaining research experience, we have many opportunities in our department during the academic year as well as in the summer. We offer a friendly and supportive academic environment to help Zoology majors achieve their goal of becoming physicians and as well as other health professionals.

Our mission in the Department of Zoology at Miami University
is to provide undergraduate and graduate students with
excellent academic preparation and research experience. The
department is one of the largest at Miami University and also
one of the largest Zoology programs in the nation. This allows
us to offer a wide range of courses and seminars from cellular
and molecular biology to conservation and environmental
biology.

The Department has outstanding laboratory facilities that are supported by the University, as well as by grants from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. Facilities include DNA sequencing, synthesizing, analytical equipment and specialized equipment for cellular, developmental and neurophysiological research, including electron microscopy and confocal laser facilities.

Miami University is located near excellent sites for field studies in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The University's Ecology Research Center, located close to the campus, has nearly two hundred acres devoted to a wide range of research projects in behavior, ecology, and environmental biology. In addition, Hueston Woods State Park is only 6 miles from campus and several other field sites are readily available to faculty and students.

The 34 faculty members in the Zoology Department work closely with students to help them plan their programs of study, conduct research, and pursue special internship and employment opportunities. A very large percentage of our undergraduates are admitted to professional and graduate schools, or acquire rewarding jobs in the biological sciences. Likewise, our graduate students have excellent success at acquiring faculty and research positions in colleges and universities, as well as employment in research laboratories, state and national parks, government agencies, and private firms.

Miami University is known for its classic architecture and beautiful campus. It is located in scenic, pastoral southwestern Ohio, one hour from Cincinnati and Dayton, and is adjacent to the quaint and historic town of Oxford. The University and town offer a peaceful and friendly community in which students can make use of the faculty and facilities to achieve their career goals.
