Closed out of a Class?

If you have been closed out of a class that is critical for your major or premed track you have several options:

1) First, be as flexible as possible. Unless it is organic or physics, or BMZ 116, it is most likely not critical that you have that specific class next semester. Consider alternates. For example, for sophomore Zoology majors who did not get into Zoo 202 or 203, consider taking Zoology 305 or Zoo 342 as a second semester sophomore.

2) If this class is critical, then you should try to convince the Professor that this is so, before the end of your current term, and request that you be put on a waiting list. Re-contact the Prof after the break, but before the class starts, and show up for the first class. You will need to convince the Prof that it is critical that you be in their class. Normally a few spaces are kept back in a class, and some students that do not show will provide openings. In some cases, show up for the first and second lecture. In most cases, persistence pays off.

3) You might also consider contacting the Prof via e-mail. To locate their e-mail address go to: http://ocean.mcs.muohio.edu/htbin/ph/ph.muohio.edu/ Then type in their last name and under classification type in Faculty. If they are not listed, try Staff. Click on the name and it should list their department, phone number and e-mail.

4) Check for open class sections on the web during the break, and when you return to campus
Open Courses. If fees are not paid, some sections may have openings before the start of class. In most cases it is much better to show up for the first class and talk with the Prof about your need rather than sitting by the computer waiting for an opening to occur once classes have begun.

5) As a last resort, you might consider talking with the Chair of the Department, if you are having trouble getting into the class. They should be willing to help you if you are being denied this class and it is preventing you from entering or applying to medical school on time. Only choose this pathway if you have a VERY STRONG case and the instructor seems unwilling or unable to help you.

You do not have a case if you do not want to take an 8:00am or 4:00pm class or because you have been told to avoid a certain instructor, or it is conflicting with a fun class that you want to take next semester.
