It is crucial that students participate in some form of clinical and community activity during their undergraduate years at Miami. For most students this occurs primarily during the summer period. For others, they obtain some medical as well as community experience while they are in Oxford. Many students can find full-time or part-time work in the summer to help pay for expenses and also find the time to gain substantial medical experience. For some, this means juggling a number of different activites during the summer. This can be obtained in a variety of ways: Volunteer in a hospital, clinic, become an EMT, or participate in a research project in a medical school or clinic setting. Your goal is obtain substantial medical experience and gain as much knowledge as you can about what it is like to be a physician before you apply to medical school. Many Miami students know one physician quite well and this person can serve as a resource to introduce you to other physicians for shadowing experiences. The Mallory-Wilson Center offers the Medical Preceptorship Program. This program coordinates opportunities for premedical students to shadow physicians who are graduates of Miami University. The Preceptorship Program is offered as a service to our students who need more medical experience. You need to demonstrate a commitment to the health profession by working directly with sick or injured patients. If you are considering applying to an MD/PhD program, then substantial research experience is also crucial. Here are some resources for you to investigate:
