Only a few students choose to enter a study abroad program each year during their sophomore or junior year. For those premed students that are very strong academically and are interested in studying abroad, this option can have a positive influence on their application to medical school. In general, the classes taken abroad can be used to fulfill some of the College of Arts and Science requirements, but it may be difficult to take premed classes or fulfill requirements for your major. The program at Lancaster University in England is an exception, since it offers a wide variety of science classes. If you are interested in studying abroad during your undergraduate years at Miami, you will need to carefully plan your classes if you want to be in a position to apply to medical school by June at the end of your junior year. If you want to enter a study abroad program during your junior year, it is strongly advised that you complete all the premed classes before the start of your junior year. This can be achieved without an overload if you take some of your premed classes during the summer and plan on taking the MCAT in August before you leave for the program. This would allow you to spend the junior year abroad. An alternative would be to take physics and organic chemistry during your sophomore year and take the MCAT in April of your sophomore year. If you elect to study abroad during your sophomore year, you may then need to take summer classes after you return in order to complete all premed class requirements before the start of your senior year. It is rather difficult to be in a study abroad program during your senior year since that is the time that interviews are usually scheduled (September-February).
